Hopefully my Top Ten lists will give you some ideas for your next dive travel adventure!!.... but talk to other divers about where they went....read write-ups in the diving magazines.....and travel guides such as the "Lonely Planet" guides are a wealth of information. Dave's Top Ten Topside Destinations!!!
So, you decided that its time for a dive vacation, BUT, you are looking for more than just an underwater wonderland, you want to be wowed topside as well. I have spent my life travelling and the following are a list of the top ten topside locations that will leave you with a dilemma of whether to dive under or explore and enjoy up above the waves....because they have both!!!
...and now starting with number 10.....
10)Cozumel, Mexico
.....although Cozumel is famous for its wall and drift diving along its beautiful reefs, this part of Mexico offers a lot more. Of course theres the obvious....the nightlife....Carlos and Charlies and Senior Frogs....you probably won't even remember how much fun you had!! If you have a spare day or two, hop the ferry (35 minutes), over to the mainland. There you have some beautiful beaches in Playa del Carmen and a short drive from there you have a number of Mayan ruins to explore, not to mention some awesome cenotes to dive in!!!
9)Australia
.....the diving on the Great Barrier Reef is famous, but Australia has a lot to offer topside as well. If you have the time you can venture all the way into the middle of the desert to Ayers Rock, head down to Sydney, or go to the north and explore the jungles of Northern Queensland....although I've done those all and more, I really enjoy hanging in Cairns!!
8)British Columbia, Canada
.....even though the diving is cold, this is one of the most beautiful spots on earth. No its not the tropics, but the scenery is spectacular....towering mountains, beautiful lakes, whale watching, camping, skiing, and even beaches in the summer!!! Vancouver is a very beautiful city with an endless list of things to do, both outdoors or if city life is more your thing a great selection of every kind of resturant and great nightclubs!!
7)Hawaii
.....Hawaii is a great topside and diving location. There are beautiful beaches on all the islands, but each island has something special. As far as sheer beauty Kauai....the big island(Hawaii), has beautiful beaches on one side and every kind of volcano you could want in Volcano National Park....nightlife, head to Oahu(Waikiki)...Maui, great beaches, good nightlie and a beautiful drive on the road to Hana!!
6)U.S. Virgin Islands
.....St.Thomas, St.John, and St.Croix make up the U.S. Virgin Islands. There is a variety of diving on them as well as topside. They all have beautiful beaches, but St.John is one of the most beautiful spots in the caribbean. The beaches are stunning, there are hikes through the jungle, and without the big crowded rush....and when your ready for that rush and you want to do some cheap duty free shopping then just head to St.Thomas....make sure to take the tram up Paradise Point!!
5)Palau
.....Palau, along with the rest of Micronesia, has got to be on everyones "must dive" list, but as far as topside the rest of Micronesia pales to Palau. With its lush mushroom shaped islands dotting the clear blue waters it is a sight to behold. When your not diving you can be exploring the islands....snorkelling with millions of jellyfish or going on a sea kayak adventure. Its a long way down to Palau and Micronesia, but if you are a diver, this will be your trip of a lifetime!!
4)Thailand
.....Thailand is my favorite destination in the world....I have taken many LONG trips there. With Thailand is a combination of things....you can spend months there and still not even get a dive in, although the diving is great. You have some stunning beaches in Koh Samui and Koh Phi Phi, which also is one of the most beautiful islands in Thailand. In Koh Tao you have a budget travellers paradise, plus whale sharks in the spring and don't forget those full moon parties on Koh Phangan!!! Up north you have the jungles to explore...try some hill tribe trekking!!! All over the counrty you have many famous buddist wats(temples) and with Thailand you can go there on any budget....5 star if you want it or if you're a backpacker you can live like a king on $20/day. Oh, did I forget the best parts....the Thai people are extremly friendly and the food....THE BEST!!!!!
3)Moorea
.....Moorea is Bora Bora's next door nieghbor. What you will soon read about Bora Bora(oops!!, gave away the next one), can be said for Moorea, maybe just a slight notch down, but awesome!!!
2)Bora Bora
.....Just saying Bora Bora brings up images of a remote romantic island in the middle of the Pacific and thats not wrong. Bora Bora is THE most beautiful tropical island in the world....with its towering jungle covered mountains, palm tree lined white sand beaches surrounded by the crystal clear azure waters and the romantic sunsets from your palapa over the water, it is exactly what a tropical paridise should be. It can be expensive to get there....even more expensive to stay there, but once you're there you will not only have the gorgeous topside scenery, but the diving is second to none....it blew me away....better than I imagined!!
....and now the NUMBER 1 topside destination is....
1)Bermuda
.....This is one of the most beautiful islands in the world, very close for anyone from North America, just straight across from North Carolina. The towns are quaint....very british....some say more british than England!! Beautiful pink sand beaches, gorgeous scenery and romantic sunsets. I have spent a lot of time in Bermuda and I never tire of it. Its a bit pricy, but as a beautiful romantic getaway, Bermuda is great above and below the waves!!

Dave's Top Ten Topside Destinations!!!
