Travel Tips
So your ready for that next dive vacation? A bit of planning can go a long way to let you have a much more enjoyable vacation!! Since I've spent my whole life travelling I am guilty of quite often doing the "last minute, seat of my pants" travel....but it seems like I never really unpack, so I'm pretty much always ready, although even now, not planning can put a crink in your trip. An example of this is last year on a trip to Mexico, I forgot to pack my battery charger for my digital camera....couldn't buy one, couldn't borrow one....SO, I ended up taking one battery life worth of pictures!! I will try and put together a few things that I have found over the years help make everything go a bit smoother once you "hit the road".
1)Where to go?
That may sound simple enough, and this is probably the one to worry about the least. The only thing to really consider here is if you are a diver and you are going with your husband, wife, non-diving friend etc., make sure you chose a location that has something for them as well. A good example of this is Truk(Chuuk) in Micronesia.....diving second to none, especially if you're a wreck diver, but for a non-diver this would be one of the least desirable places for a vacation!
2)When to go?
Do a bit of homework for this one....you don't want to pick a vacation spot only to find out its monsoon season and they average 6 days of rain a week, or its a certain festival and prices may be greatly inflated or maybe theres an event that you may want to witness....eg. whale sharks in Thailand. Doing a bit of research may add just that little extra to make your trip just a little better.
3)What to pack?
Make a list at least a couple of weeks before you go....you will be surprised the little, but important things that you will remember over the days leading up to your trip.
There are things that if you do forget you can buy wherever you go, but there are certain things that you should do/have before you go.
-documents....passport, airline tickets, credit cards, travellers checks, insurance card, c-card(most dive shops will require this)....***make photocopies of all documents and keep in seperate locations in case of theft or loss.
-Also make sure you leave a copy of your itinary with someone at home incase of an emergency at either end.
-medicines....any medications that you may need on the trip or any shots you may need before you go.
-OVERPACKING....I can't stress this enough, especially if you plan on moving around at all....DO NOT OVERPACK!!! ....you will be miserable. I have found after a lifetime of travel my luggage gets smaller and smaller, and still I find that I don't use everything I take. Packing will depend a lot on what you are doing besides diving....any nights out where you may want to dress up?....are the nights cool, or is it always steaming hot?....hiking in the jungle or always at the beach? You can see depending on the vacation location, what you pack can differ greatly. Besides the documents make sure to pack your dive log book, a book to read, sunglasses, sunscreen, toiletries, and about HALF the clothes that your thinking of bringing. If your diving a lot, most of your day will be spent in your swimsuit.
4)Dive equipment...Yes/No????
This is one a still struggle with....all my diving career I have hauling my mega heavy dive bag to every corner of the world. What can I say....I love having my own gear with me, BUT....there were many times I felt like just throwing it in the ocean. If you are travelling to one location, by all means take it....if you are travelling around a lot, then you must ask yourself if its worth carrying your 75 lb dive bag around for 5 days of diving out of a 21 day trip?? Most dive shops carry good rental gear. I recently took a couple of dive trips in which I was diving less than half the time and travelling around a lot, instead of taking all my gear I only took my mask, computer and logbook....when your travelling around on chicken buses, local ferries, and doing a lot of walking, it was a good feeling not to be lugging my dive bag around that I affectionatly call "Grandma"
5)You're a visitor
Remember you're not at home....respect other countries cultures and embrace the differences and enjoying learning how they live....you'll have a better time and they will also be much more receptive to you....don't be like one guy I met in Vietnam who was pissed off at the people in Vietnam for not speaking english?!?! Also, be careful....some of the greatest diving spots in the world are also places that have a lot of poverty....DON'T flash around a lot of cash or jewelry, besides just being annoying you are also asking to be relieved of your valuables!!!
.....safe travels and good diving!!!!
