Top Diving Destinations
With over 2000 dives in 53 countries and counting, it gets hard to pick your favorite destination, but there are always a few that stick out in your mind. When choosing a top destination, I try to take a number of things in account...
The diving(of course)
-variety of diving, reefs, visability, health of marine life, wrecks?, walls?, big animal encounters?
Top-side attractions
-beaches, nightlife, sightseeing,other activities.
Hopefully this information will help you to pick a dive vacation that will be exciting both above and below the waves.
Top Destination: Micronesia
As an ultimate dive destination, I have chosen Micronesia. Of course this is a huge area that takes in a lot of dive areas....Federated States of Micronesia(Truk(Chuuk),Yap,Pohnpei,Kosrae), Palau, Guam and the Northern Marianas.
Its a long and expensive trip out there and unless you have very deep pockets, it can be one of those once in a lifetime trips, so take the time to do it right, you will not regret it!! I spent a month of hardcore diving out there and could have spent a couple more....it was a trip of a lifetime!!!
Variety.....where else can you dive a fleet of intact shipwrecks, some of the most beautiful reefs and walls, and see all the big animals you could ever want to see, sharks, manta rays and some beautiful top-side scenery....Micronesia!!!!
Truk(Chuuk)....the mecca for serious wreck divers....even though they changed there name from Truk to Chuuk, every wreck diver I know still refers to it as Truk!!! As a wreck diving location I can't say enough about this place....almost any wreck here would be the signature wreck in any other country, but in Truk you have it all right here, a fleet of intact wrecks littered with artifacts....if you are into wrecks this is a MUST....you will be amazed!!
Pohnpei,Kosrae....only spent a few days on these islands, some beautiful reef diving and some awesome topside scenery.
Yap....famous for the mantas, and it is a sight to behold, not to mention top-side there is money there that would definitly tear a hole in your pocket!!
Guam....an ultra-modern place, all the comforts of home with some great diving as well, wreck diving and reef dives!!
Palau....Palau is famous for its reef diving and wall diving. The Blue Corner is an amazing dive, lots of sharks, lots of every kind of fish and lots of nice corals....even a chance to dive with mantas in Palau. There are a lot of WWII shipwrecks to dive in Palau, but due to how good the reefs and walls are, its not an easy thing to get them out to dive the wrecks. Aside from the great diving in Palau, top-side the mushroom islands of Palau are some of the most beautiful top-side scenery in the world. You also have the famous Jellyfish Lake to snorkel in, Chandellier Cave(a cavern dive), and lots of other activities like sea-kayaking.
If your ever planning one "BIG" dive trip, Micronesia is a place not to be missed!!!
