Wreck Diving
If you do not yet have your wreck diving training PADI,NAUI and most other certifying dive agencies over wreck diving training. Wreck diving is a fantastic new world, but it is also a world of new dangers....get trained and enjoy the wonders wreck diving offers.
Wrecks are fantastic places to explore, but with diving wrecks comes new dangers....getting disoriented and lost, lost in a silt-out, trapped in a collapse of the wreck, clostraphobia, entangled in wires or debris, or an out-of-air emergency with no escape to the surface. No, I'm not writing this to scare you away from wreck diving, but to just tell you the importance of being properly trained and prepared....don't be one of those people they say "Those who dive in wrecks, die in wrecks"
-training....get wreck certified, technical certified if diving wrecks beyond recreational limits.
-bouyancy control....practice, practice....when wreck diving having perfect bouyancy control can not only save your life, but it will make it a lot more enjoyable for you and especially anyone behind you trying to take photos if your not finning up silt. It doesn't take much to silt up a wreck, go slow, use a modified frog kick or even pull yourself through carefully with your fingers.
-recreational limits....unless you are technically certified stick to recreational diving limits. That means if the wreck is 100 feet under the water, you can only penetrate 30 feet....if you penetrate 100 feet in, if you have an emergency you leave yourself 200 feet to the surface. Its easy to break this rule, I know I've done it before myself, before I became a tek-diver....avoid that temptation, get further training and dive safe!!!
-rule of thirds.....one third in....one third out....one third for a safety margin. Most accidents happen because divers break the rules. A few years ago I personally had to rescue a diver who came up to me in the wreck at 120 feet with 300psi in his tank....he was a bit overwieght, a bit stressed, and not monitoring his gauges(they only work if you look at them!!!), by the time he got to me he was in a full panic....after calming him down, he used my octopus and we surfaced. That had a happy ending, even though you are always supposed to dive with a buddy, I have found over the years the best way to be safe is to be self-sufficiant, well trained....what if your buddy isn't there?????
-reels and lights....if you are doing a deep penetration of a wreck always use a diving reel incase of a silt-out or you can become disoriented....you'll be glad you took the time and effort to bring that reel!! 3...for me 3 is the number of lights I take....a main light, and medium sized back-up and a small back-up to the back-up and of course if its a deep penetration either doubles or a spare bottle.
-Plan your dive, dive your plan....I know you heard it a thousand times, but its important....make your plan how deep, where in the wreck you plan to penetrate, where to meet if seperated, signals, and psi turnaround(rule of thirds). Follow the rules and have a safe enjoyable dive!!
Where to dive....now thats the fun part, deciding where your next wreck diving adventure will take you. I have travelled to every corner of the world searching for the best shipwrecks, plane wrecks and "other" wrecks there is and over the centuries through storms, wars, artificial reef programs and some unlucky navigation we have been provided a plethora of wrecks to chose from. Below I'm going to list what I think are the top ten wreck diving locations in the world. Click on my "Dave's Top Ten" to find other top ten dive lists.
1)Truk (Chuuk)Lagoon, Micronesia
.....the mecca for serious wreck divers....even though they changed there name from Truk to Chuuk, every wreck diver I know still refers to it as Truk!!! As a wreck diving location I can't say enough about this place....almost any wreck here would be the signature wreck in any other country, but in Truk you have it all right here, a fleet of intact wrecks littered with artifacts....if you are into wrecks this is a MUST....you will be amazed!!
2)Bermuda
.....centuries of shipwrecks, combined with some of the most beautiful top-side scenery anywhere!!!
3)Red Sea(Egypt)
.....a nice variety of wrecks, with the Thistlegorm being the signature wreck there.
4)Palau, Micronesia
.....a great selection of WWII wrecks, should be rated higher, BUT, getting the dive operators off the reef and to the wrecks is not an easy task!!! Also, the mushroom islands of Palau are stunning!!
5)Virgin Islands(British & U.S.)
.....I put them together because they overlap, and can both be done on one dive trip. Some great wrecks here, Rhone being the signature wreck, some beautiful topside scenery as well, St. John U.S.V.I. in particular.
6)Aruba
.....a nice variety of shipwrecks and plane wrecks, not to mention some really nice beaches.
7)North Carolina
.....centuries of wrecks here as well, a bit far offshore on some of them, but close to home.
8)Greneda
.....Bianca C.....even though there are many other shipwrecks there, just diving the ill-fated cruise ship is worth the trip!!
9)Florida Keys
.....an great selection of wrecks, and with their artifical reef programs there are more all the time.
10)British Columbia
.....COLD....okay, if that didn't scare you, then you have a great wreck diving destination with lots of huge wrecks to choose from, also some beautiful topside scenery....don't forget that dry-suit!!
